Monday ushered in a new year, goodbye to the woes of 2018, it is time for a fresh start – I guess?
I have always been skeptical of the need to radically change things at the turn of a new year. There are no particular reasons why January allows for a shift and the rest of the year doesn’t. Don’t do yourself a disservice by waiting on a new year or month to do better for you, making a change as an when needed despite it being uncomfortable, is one of the less glamorous acts of self-care that actually makes a big change.
Anywho, let’s get into the week we had and what you just couldn’t miss:
Trump of the Tropics
It was with a heavy heart that the eyes of the world fell on Brazil where Jair Bolsonaro, the newly elected hardline president, had his inauguration. A tragic day really.
Admittedly, I didn’t sit down and watch his whole entire inauguration because I know that anybody that the President of the United States is “With” is probably a terrible person and won’t surprise me much. Living in a globalised world, however, we must speak about and acknowledge these blatant injustices.
Congratulations to President @JairBolsonaro who just made a great inauguration speech – the U.S.A. is with you!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 1, 2019
Bolsonaro was elected on a platform of tackling the endemic crime problem in Brazil. He also pledged to deal with systematic corruption and economic mismanagement at government level. Although he TRIED to position himself as the anti-establishment candidate, he has served in the lower house of congress for seven years. He’s a nasty piece of work and has never really shied from controversy. Whether it be calling black activists “animals” who should “go back to the zoo” or saying he’d rather a “dead” son than a gay one, he constantly finds new ways to show the world that he’s a piece of trash.
He hasn’t even been in post for 72 hours and already he has fired close to 300 seemingly left-wing civil servants. All in attempt to free Brazil from the grips of “ideology”. It is a bleak time in Brazil and my heart goes out to the activists that have been and are working to fight against their fascist president. So, other than displacing indigenous people, jailing leftists and terrorising the LGBTQ+ and black communities of Brazil, what are his actual plans? Well, they are speeding into a ‘minimal state’ through a mass wave of privatization and handing guns out to pretty much, well, anyone.
The Not-so ‘Migrant Crisis’ *Wink, Wink*
F-F-FAKE NEWS back at it again in our own backyard this time with Sajid Javid subverting the truth to appeal to the nations lack of moral compass.
In 2018 a grand, overwhelming total of 539 people risked their lives and crossed the channel to seek asylum in this country. Of this number 40 came on Christmas and 12 on Boxing day. 80% of migrants that came to the UK in 2018 arrived from November onwards, which obviously propelled us into a complete state of CRISIS!
He insisted that migrants who first landed in France but decided to travel to the UK for asylum weren’t ‘real’ asylum seekers. Which is crazy because a) you’re not legally obliged to take refuge at the first place you arrive to and b) You can’t penalise migrants for entering the UK through unusual routes it’s just not a thing.
As a result of the slowly rising influx of migrants, Javid decided to has roll out two more Border Force vessels to toughen up on security measures and deter desperate migrants. Trying to disincentivise migrants from coming to the UK by forcing them back to persecution is ILLEGAL MATE.
This should come as no surprise as it is all just an extension of the hostile environment policy that migrants are subject to in the UK. The one that makes conditions for migrants so unbelievably unbearable that they have no choice but to leave. We’ve seen these same debilitating policies applied first-hand to the Windrush generation.
Surviving R Kelly
This the harrowing 6-part #SurvivingRKelly documentary was released and caused a paralysing frustration in me.
Depending on how old you are, this will either be a shocking revelation or solidifier of the truth. The docuseries explicitly details the abuse and torment of (very) young women at the hands of R Kelly. Even after finishing the episodes, the stories and testimonies linger on in your mind and heart.
Like most, I’d always heard rumblings that R Kelly was someone to be suspicious of, but I had no idea the extent to which he was destroying lives and families through his sick actions. This is often swept up because R. Kelly is revered in the black community and has provided the soundtrack to our weddings, birthdays, church services and more.
In the show, you learn how people around him were complicit in his actions and allowed him to manipulate and trap young women in an abusive sex cult dating back to 1994 and onwards. You also learn about the way he abused his wife so much she her unborn child’s heart stopped beating. Not to mention the way he strategically forced women into dependency by ostracising them from their families.
I won’t go into too much detail as you can watch for yourself, but if there is one thing to take away from this all it is that black women are being failed daily, particularly poor black women. R Kelly’s victims were so easy to brush-off and look over because they were black and working class, they were seen as replaceable and bottom of the barrel.
The most disparaging, potentially career-ending video of Cortez has just gone viral. She has just been caught on camera…
…dancing with her friends?
The endearing and vibrant Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sprinkled some life into us after a lethargic Christmas period when a video of her dancing went viral. The video, featuring music from “Lisztomania”, was initially leaked in an attempt to smear Cortez the day before her inauguration but it did the complete opposite.
Condemn her???— Bryan Behar (@bryanbehar) January 4, 2019
I aspire to someday again be as happy, free and uninhibited as AOC is dancing.
When did we become a nation of grumpy haters?
Imagine what a major ass-head one would have to be to think that video of @AOC dancing is anything but adorable and endearing and charming.— Zach Braff (@zachbraff) January 4, 2019
After seeing the video gain so much positive attention and traffic, she did what any savvy millennial would do and solidify her place in internet history by meme-ing her self! She filmed a second video dancing outside her shiny new office on Capitol Hill showing that even “Congresswomen dance too”
I hear the GOP thinks women dancing are scandalous.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 4, 2019
Wait till they find out Congresswomen dance too! 💃🏽
Have a great weekend everyone 🙂 pic.twitter.com/9y6ALOw4F6
When asked about the video and the backlash coming from the GOP she said “It is not normal for elected officials to have a reputation for dancing well and I’m happy to be one.” She took then took a jibe at the GOP “It is unsurprising to me that Republicans would think having fun should be disqualifying or illegal”.
I mean, she’s also been attacked by the GOP for, living in a home (yep) and owning a coat…
We stan a lefty dancing queen
